I have been with 90fm for four years and it is absolutely amazing how much we do here. Every year we have Dylan Days, Jazzfest, Radiothon, Beatlesfest, and Trivia which is world's largest trivia contest. Plus 90fm does everything that a normal student radio station would do. This station is amazing and college would suck without having 90fm.

WVFS has the best, most consistent quality of any station I have ever heard. They expand your mind and rock your party!!
KSCR has music you can't hear anywhere else. KSCR puts on concerts for free with acts like crystal antlers, the dodos, thee oh sees, mika miko, busdriver, etc. KSCR has a blog and annual magazine. KSCR owns.

KSCR had concerts with bands as diverse as No Age, My Chemical Romance, the Dodos, Mirah, Ghostland Observatory, M83 and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin before ANY of these bands became big!!!!
It takes an awesome station to find and break the next big thing.

WONB is one of the best college radio stations around. Great music format, awesome dj's, and their community involvement is amazing. They broadcast a lot of the university sports, but also the high school sports in the area too. They keep the area updated on community events and has live programming from 6AM to Midnight daily.
WASU is so great and popular we can barely fit in enough time for all the DJ's to have a spot! So many DJ's with so much character we can hardly contain it!!!
Not to mention we play the very best in alternative music!

WCRD is amazing! They pretty much have a DJ in the studio 24/7. They have sports, news, excellent talk shows, a phenomenal sales staff, a faculty advisor who cares so deeply for the station's success and the best management staff I've even seen anywhere!
Here is why 90.5 WASU is the best college radio station:
1) The perfect music for college!
2) Always giving away great stuff like movie tickets, concert tickets, and anything else us poor college kids want.
3) Hilarious commercials that are created by the students.
4) Great radio voices that are always on air. LIVE!
5) They do so much and their studio is like a closet. A new one is being built right now but they are the best station I have ever heard any they have done so much with little resources. That is passion!
6) The station manager is Jon Wood. Obviously WASU is destined to win the woody award!
The fact that KSCR is completely run by student volunteers speaks volumes about its quality. The staff, djs, and interns truly love what they do and it definitely shows through the programming, concerts, and overall feel of the station.
No, it takes being in LA. That's it. Shit tons of people, and the bands don't have to go anywhere to play at your campus. This does not make you a better radio station.

KSCR has fought against the USC student government to retain our funding and position at the school. We work together with our alumni to better the future of our station. We actually care about the station's FUTURE and not just what happen to be on the air right now.
If I need something to listen to, I know 90.5 WASU will have great music waiting for me. They always play the best in alternative and local. Really the only station I need to listen to up here.
KSCR has a monthly magazine called Bandwidth! It features some of the most talented music journalists that LA has to offer.
Also, KSCR has yearly festivals like KSCRfest, monthly FREE live shows, and a live band in studio EVERY WEEK! That's a lot of live music KSCR Los Angeles! Keep it up!

Actually Zerbe, no. Most of our programming consists of Alternative/Independent music. But we also play jazz, blues, oldies, funk, reggae, metal, acoustic, electronica, and hip-hop. 90fm plays those weekends of Bob Dylan and the Bealtes because we spend a whole weekend appreciating legendary artists such as the Beatles and Bob Dylan, because a lot of artists' inspirations are Dylan and the Beatles. Plus both of them have enough music to play for 56 hours. So no, we're not a classic rock station. We're station that plays all songs besides the hits that you here on classic rock stations.

It's completely student run…. from trafficking, production, to talent, 90.5 WASU has it all, and still sounds like a professional station! I love WASU! I always call in to win tickets! And they have some pretty kick-butt songs too!
As a college radio station, WONB-94 is better than most commercial radio stations. They play all types of music so there is something for everyone. Great job, WONB-94. Keep up the good work!
It was a tossup between WXPN and WUSB, because WPKN is no longer affiliated with the U. of Bridgeport, but since WXPN wasn't listed (and neither was Towson), I voted for WUSB.
WGRE is a great radio station. DePauw University is a very small liberal arts university and to be included among these much larger schools speaks volumes to the quality of the music and content of WGRE. It plays a great combination of up-and-coming bands and classics. Many people on and off campus (around the world even thanks to listen live on wgre.org) listen. It is on 24 hours, manned completely by students. WGRE is just a great radio station.
WUSB is straight up the best station in the nation. Sports, news, jamz, PSA's; all college stations have that. Polka Fest, Blues Fest, Salsathon, Destinies, Teresea Zapolksa, Jazz Fest, Charlie Backfish, YAWL AIN'T GOT DAT. That's why WUSB is number one and will always be number one. Plus I here they like wood.
WGRE provides the best music, best news coverage, and best sports coverage to DePauw University and the surrounding community. It is the biggest organization on campus & arguably the most popular! WGRE has a great history of being the best & those who are affiliated with it are committed to keeping that tradition alive! VOTE FOR WGRE 915!!!
WGRE proves that a group of students can do just about anything when enough hard work is put into it. Everyone on campus loves this station and it is always playing all around campus, and our town of Greencastle loves it too. VOTE WGRE!!!!
WGRE in Greencastle, IN at DePauw University is a great station! The student directors work tirelessly to make the station the best it can be. Over 200 students are involved in the radio, making it the largest student organization! Vote for them!

WRHU is the best station in the country. I applied to some of these colleges and heard their radio stations, and they sucked out LOUD! (Literally) Hofstra Radio is the best!
WCRD at Ball State is completely student-run. It was started by David Letterman with that in mind, and has been student-run for 21 years. This past year, through the hard work and dedication of the students, WCRD was able to move into a state-of-the-art facility that rivals most commercial radio stations.
Most of the funding the station gets comes from the students themselves…meaning they go out and sell the station to the community…just like any commercial radio station would do. Not only was it fun to work there (I'm an alum), but it was a great learning experience for someone who wanted to work in radio as a profession.
appalachian state only have cows and hill billies listening to their station. And none even know how to operate a radio. In other words, they probably are listening to another station instead of listening to your hick music station.

WASU cares about our community. They report on pertinent news, bring us SGA debates, and cover all on-campus events to keep us up to date on what's going on at Appalachian State and in Boone and surrounding areas.
WONB is awesome. I asked them to play the Mars Volta one night and what do you know… they played the Mars Volta.

KSCR can suck my left nut. Some stations don't have money coming out of their ass. A broke station doing big things is better that a well funded station doing anything at all.
WSUM has live DJ's scheduled 24/7! Free-form programming so any DJ can play any style of music they want as well as host a talk show of any topic and get great sports coverage!
It's true – KSCR volunteers crashed a student government meeting (the last one of the fiscal year, the one everyone expects to last no more than 20 minutes) and turned it into a 4-hour marathon debate. The amount of the funding that the student government council threatened to pull–the ONLY handout money of any kind that KSCR receives from USC–was less than $5000. The rest of the station's paltry budget is generated by the tireless efforts of its all-student staff, who have had to get creative and do things like sell PSA time and have 24-hour Ella Fitzgerald marathons to raise funds. It is likely that KSCR runs on fewer funds than several of what you would call "broke stations."

I have volunteered at KSCR. I have been a member of its staff. I can confidently attest that it is "broke." We'd sure like to have money coming out of our ass, but the university and the student government respectively feel that USC's all-classical station and annual "big-ticket" crowd-pleasing concerts (staged completely without KSCR input and sanction) from the likes of The Fray are more important financial priorities.
So, please, get your facts straight before you spew bile at your brother. We're trying as hard as we can, too!

WRVU Nashville is a truly great radio station, but the truth is that the non-student run radio shows are what make it a unique station. Most of the college students just play lame trendy hipster crap.
WVFS Tallahassee has half a jeep, a giant-sized belt of C02 cannisters, and that spunky attitude older men like. Not like gross older men. Like ones with yachts. Nice yachts.

Hello, I'm local celebrity Gene Deckerhoff. When I'm not announcing gridiron action, I'm kissing Bobby Bowden's butt. but when I'm finished doing that, I listen to WVFS Tallahassee, the Voice of Florida State!
90 FM not only has a place on my car radio, but also a significant place in our community. Personally, I am not a college student any longer and not even an alum of UW-SP, but nonetheless, 90 FM has a place in my life not only for running the world's largest trivia contest, but also for providing endless hours of meaningful music, especially with Beatlesfest and Dylan Days (all of which are 54 hour extravaganzas). The station is also known for reaching out to our diverse community through it's programming, including an hour each day broadcast in Hmong. 90 FM is worthy of your consideration.
I second all the replies to this ignorant poster– KSCR has very little money, and it takes the heart and soul of every DJ, intern, and staffer, from freshman to senior, grad to undergrad, to keep it alive. Seldom will you find so many lovers of great music who are more knowledgeable of their contact and accepting of their listeners than anyone you'll ever meet. LONG LIVE KSCR!
I love WASU! We have great music… but it's not just about that… they also have a great production crew, and I think they have a very commercial professionalism with a college twist.
While most college stations stick to generic indie rawk…KSCR has shows dedicated to PUNK, METAL, ELECTRONICA, WORLD MUSIC, SPORTS, NEWS, HIP HOP and even VINYL!
The ASU games you broadcast are the greatest..especially last weekend's game with Oregon State..The girl who broadcasted it was really good campared to the two students who did it the week before….Congrats……I am a ASU alum and live in Calif.

KSCR is entirely student-run and has had to fight for every dollar of their budget from the SC Student Gov. I think they are doing a fantastic job with the few resources they have. It all goes back to the dedicated students who come together because they love music. It doesn't get any simpler or better than that. Rock on KSCR!

WCRD is the #1 college radio station on the planet! I and a few others were on mtvU when WCRD was featured during the Woodie Awards in 2005/'06. Plus, our station now has state of the art facilities & top students to keep it going strong. 21 years strong that is.
WGRE is in the top 5 on the Princeton review for best radio stations! It says something that a small college like DePauw can run with the big boys for that title! VOTE WGRE
WCRD is an amazing station and one of my best career influences while at Ball State. I was the Promotions Director and was lucky enough to help with the format change. The station now plays even more student approved music along with BSU info and specialty shows. I had the pleasure of booking concerts with local bands and interviews with touring artists. Along with getting WCRD to receive tickets to give away to the hottest concerts in Indiana. I now work for Live Nation and can thank WCRD for giving me the music business knowledge & experience to get my dream job!
WKPS THE LION 90.7…… is simply the best. The Station plays every genre imaginable and actually plays what the Penn State community wants to hear. Did I mention its run by students and for the students 24/7 365.

KUPS is simply the best radio station ever. "The Late Night Snack" with DJ Papa Murph is probably the best radio show I've ever heard. DJ Wildcard is also an excellent choice for quality rap, and the themed shows always provide superb driving music.
WCRD has the best live sports coverage. The announcers at the games are better than the old guy who's been doing it for over 50 years!
WCRD covers more than just football and basketball. WCRD's coverage of swimming and diving was amazing and the ONLY time I've heard that sport on the radio!
Simply put, WCRD is the best!
Oh, so I get to just HOPE the types of music i like are going to be playing when i want to listen and IF i'm so lucky I'll flip after 1 or 2 songs. Well, at least that is better than dedicating a station to "something progressive with its own niche." WGRE plays a great mix of mostly alternative music and some popular music, too. It has specialty shows, sports and news broadcasts, and no commercials!
Airtime is around the clock during the school year which is quite impressive for a school of only 2400 students.

I have a friend that could've gone to OSU but she instead chose to come to ASU for the music program
we are one of the top 2 concert planning and booking groups in the nation, and I doubt Ohio is the other
we play pretty much the same stuff you do, music sent in from record companies and promoters
we sift through all of them and pick what we deem best for our format (alternative) which def isn't trendy hipster crap, so quit your bitchin and don't hate what you don't know
"BEST shows" is a matter of opinion, I wouldn't call those the best shows anywhere, and same for a hell of a lot others
of course, some would too, but again, it's all opinion
we give away tix to shows in Charlotte and Raleigh, both over two hours away

we have the only All American Rejects, Taking Back Sunday, and Anberlin show in North Carolina and that isn't bluegrass is it?

but SHOWS have NOTHING to do with radio, if anything, radio promotes a show like a day or two before on a whim, it isn't planned out in advance anywhere (and yes, I do know what I'm talking about)
KUPS is a firm believer in the fact that we really don't give a damn about being the best. We're stoked we made Top 25 we hope we make Top 5, but mostly we just have our shows and enjoy the fuck out of broadcasting music.
WASU is awesome for the following reasons:

We do live in a small town. Why is that held against us? We wouldn't give up these beautiful mountains for anything. There's great hiking trails and lakes not even 15 minutes from campus. The best ski resorts in North Carolina are just down the road! The town is a top tourist spot! We love our town!
We'd take this town over a rude, noisy city any day!

Just because you say that you know what you're talking does NOT mean you know what you are talking about. We do ticket giveaways on air, sure, and there are some amazing shows that our listeners get to attend for free. But, we also put on our own shows for the USC students and LA public for free — 100% on our own. Yeah, maybe things like that have nothing to do with your 'radio station,' but it's just one amazing aspect of KSCR… and we don't bring in All American Rejects… gross.

As a station WASU has continously grown with the school, community and experience. 90.5 WASU really has been working hard to be a realistic station and so far, so good.
WIUX has made the comeback of all comebacks. It's entirely student run and they work with little money they have and STILL put on great shows and events. Culture Shock every year? One of the best music festivals of up-and-coming artists out there AND it's completely free! The staff is there all the time and they aren't paid to do it–everyone who volunteers at WIUX truly loves being there and wants to see the station win the Woodie it deserves!
WCRD all the way! WCRD has the best music ever and not to mention every department rocks! Sports, Sales/promotion, production, news, music, dj's, and everyone else! Plus the website is killer! And of course WCRD has the best facilities and is always up to date. We are College Radio on Demand!

to consider boone "diverse" is amusing alone, but to consider that a good show is another thing. it might have been musically forward ten years ago. boone will never be able to compete with new york. sorry, I'm from NC, but it's just true.
Can't we keep this classy? Wishing you all the best but it really isn't helping NY's image. NY as a state is a very diverse and interesting area with it's own cultural. Boone does have hicks which every city I've been to from NYC to LA has.
Our cultural is rich too in history and character. As a station and 90.5 and ASU bring that in to our education and our news. It's a positive influence. So it's a friendly competition, we all deserve to be here and have earned the right to be called a top college station.
90.5 WASU gives me all the new music I can't here anywhere else. I swear I've gotten like 15 new favorite bands from them this year alone. Thanks radio people!
We do have diversity up here from local bands like Do it To Julia, Farewell, to bands like Bafoodus, The Wailers, Step-Shows, Comedians Owen Smith and BJ Novak from the Office. We brought Dave Matthews Band when they were just starting out, John Mayer, Guster, Black Eyed Peas and few years back.
We're not in a major market at all yet we are able to bring a lot of entertainment to campus with a show or more a week. ASU has an amazing music program and music industry. From what it sounds like, you all do to. It's really damn cool that you brought those bands to campus(big dodos fan).
But seriously don't write 90.5 WASU and Appalachian off on a positive comment on your station. Feel free to be promoting your station with your strengths but what's the point in insulting our hardworking campus in the process?

Are you so threatened by us that you need to inform strangers, who are probably going to just vote for their favorite station anyways, that we are in the mountains of north carolina and are still able to bring strong acts and put together a radio station that is being considered in the same league as your colleges?
I decided to listen to KSCR to see what type of station ya'll are and honestly I'm impressed. I'm proud that we are able to be competing on the same field as a much bigger school who also knows what it's doing on the air. It gives credit to us too as we are able to be on that scale in a much smaller area. It's exciting.
It has nothing to do with the fact we have, not less, but a smaller and different campus than many of the schools here. It has to do with the fact we all are supporting great stations on a national scale.
Voters shouldn't care about where we are but how we sound. I hope the same goes for your college too.

Props to every University who got on here. They all did for obvious reasons.
I'm Voting for WASU because not only do they do everything listed from above, BUT THEY ALSO.
1) Don't fall to mainstream music, they help get new bands out (and give tickets) that will one day be like butthole surfers, blink 182, ect. Which is just as good if not better then going to some huge concert with thousands of people.
2) They bring history of music to the table by playing oldies and other pop culture with their commercials.
3) Absolutely no sell out commercials, so hardly any at all.
4) They're the radio station for one of the most legitimate schools out there. In my opinion universities don't get much fairer then Appalachian.
Coyote Radio all the way. This is the best station in all of California, you wouldnt expect something this awesome to come out of the Inland Empire. Definately worth checking out!!!

We're BY FAR the smallest campus in this contest, are completely student run and function out of the world s amallest booth with a pretty tiny budget. Despite this CMJ LOVES us (our Music Directors get awards from them and do panels at CMJ Festival) and have been ranked in the top 12 college stations by the Princeton review for the last 5 years.Yep, we're pretty much amazing.

I also wish that my station had to fight our student government to get funding and support. Being considered an important part of the university community by both the sga AND the administration is overrated. I guess it's much more important to provide awesome shows than to have the support of your own school.
FSU students are notorious for being late to class because parking is a bitch. We're also known for missing class because we can't turn WVFS off after we find a spot.

WIUX is an awesome radio station. Everytime I turn it on, there's a good program. PLUS it's completely student run, and everyone that volunteers there loves what they do!

Those who listen to V89 represent a diverse population of all ages and backgrounds. Our struggles reflect the strength of our station. The resulting self-sufficiency and fortitude of KSCR have made the station better in every department. while funding from our student government is difficult, we've opened other lines of revenue (PSAs, underwriting, sponsorships, alumni funds, etc.) that allow us to continue to provide the services that our community and student body love (great crisp programming, "awesome shows," etc.). We've become a formidable institution in that regard, but we're open to any and all students at USC. We're run by students, for students, and you won't get anything like that elsewhere.

If you're going to study radio, you go as close to market one as you can. Market one is NYC. Ithaca is up in the middle of no where and so are all these other schools. Have fun finding internships when A) you don't have the professional broadcast training Hofstra provides and B) you live/go to school in an area that really has nothing to offer in that field. WRHU deserves this woodie. Lets do this.
WIUX is run out of a house that is literally falling apart. Yet, somehow, out of this run down house, comes great student radio. Every student is passionate about being on the air, there are great djs and hilarious discussions. WIUX is a great student radio that may fall apart soon, considering the studio that it is run in. But as a student, I wouldn't want it any other way.
third rate? excuse me? 90 FM is a great station, and if you just took the time to listen you would really enjoy it too. we have some really talented djs and are music section is second to none. plus we run ourselves and don't need to funding from npr, or wpr. so excuse me.
UW-Stevens Point and UW-Madison is part of UW System, along with Oshkosh, Lacrosse, Eau Claire, Stout, River Falls, Whitewater, Superior, and Plateville. Madison might be academically better than Stevens Point, but that doesn't make it a third rate version. They are both good schools with good radio stations (but 90fm is better.)

The students run events, and help promote local and underground artists, while we live in a smaller city than Los Angeles, and New York City, we provide more new music than both of those cities combined, with a greater diversity of genre's.
I've tried to respect all the stations in this competition, but I've come to realize that KSCR is simply cocky, self-assured, and generally obnoxious. You don't seem to realize that rather than being miles ahead of the rest, you're simply on par with everyone else in this competition, even the so-called "hicks." I see nothing on your website to suggest otherwise, and I've listened to hours of your programming. Solid, yes, but nothing I couldn't find from any other station here. Let's not count our chickens before they hatch, yes?
WIUX's slogan is "Pure Student Radio"…and I've seen them back it up through their dedication to serving the student body at Indiana University. Vote for WIUX!

WASU seriously rocks! The variety is great and it brings a lot of attention to up-and-coming bands before they even get to mainstream society. It's perfect for a college and it is completely student-run! I'll take a WASU any day of the week.
KCOU has been run for 45 years solely by student volunteers. The dedicated staff has managed to create comprehensive programming while fostering the creativity of the entire staff. KCOU is constantly playing new music that cannot be heard anywhere else.
Last year KCOU was almost shut down by student government, but with the help of Mizzou students and KCOU staff, KCOU triumphantly rose again, bigger and better than ever!

I listened to WICB when I was in Ithaca, I listened to WICB when I lived in Boston and now I listen to WICB from San Francisco. No commercials, surprising programming and great live shows. I'll continue to listen from the world over, regardless of whether they win the Woodie. WICB forever.

and since i've been a student at USC, i can remember seeing The Dodos, Thee Oh Sees, Daedelus, Busdriver, Crystal Antlers, Other Lives and dozens of other bands at various KSCR concerts…not to mention all the bands that have been on the Live show…
so what…i think it was at least 2 years before they "made it big," when they still had a thing for vampires and rockabilly and stuff.

I volunteered as a dj when I was a student and I was amazed at the variety of music 90 FM had in its collection-local bands to classic alternative to jazz. What an awesome mix. I learned of so many bands that I never would have discovered or been able to listen to for that matter, on any other station.

Professional radio (you know, what we're preparing for) does not focus on breaking bands. That is what the record labels do. This is not a competition to see who plays the most obscure random indie crap out there. This is a competition to see what stations operate professionally while entertaining a niche audience. You know, what commercial stations do. Who cares where you are located? Radio stations exist everywhere (*gasp*), and believe it or not, even small towns have successful stations that don't play country, bluegrass, or whatever the hell else you all seem to assume that WASU plays. This isn't a competition to see who has the biggest dick, although that is exactly what you guys all seem to think it is.
Why do you seem to think this is a music competition? Perhaps you couldn't get into the music industries (aka recording for those that don't know) program at your school? Or do you even have one? Maybe you should find one and quit ranting about "breaking underground artists."

What moron ever convinced you that a College Station is BROADcasting? On the Internet, there are a LOT more niche-types to bring the "numbers" up and make bean-counters happy. Wait a minute, College Radio doesn't SELL advertising (they can't or would lose their License), so they CAN'T be commercial. And what Sefl-agrandizing Commercial Station would even LET a Loacl College COMPETE with them? Not many, unless they are donors – and at that point there's no conflict. Except of some wired, twisted interest.
A college music station run by students should be PROTECTED (and in US law, they are, in fact protected as far as WHAT music and programming they play) against having to "work hard" to keep well funded. In Canada, University and College (and even Highschool) Radio Stations lose their license BECAUSE they play commercial music – it is against CA Broadcast Regs to do so.
Wehre else are you going to find Retired Jewish GILFS? FLA, duh. And being Jewish isn't a race. Jewishness is Life, a Religion of sorts. And just don't get me strted on that Old Klezmer Music, bubulah!
I am 55 years old, a UI alum, and have KRUI on the presets on our home Bose stereo, in my pickup, and on my MP3 FM. KRUI is truly an asset of the University of Iowa.
KUPS is WAY smaller than the rest of these stations and completely student run. Hope you guys don't cry when our itty bitty school and itty bitty station KICK YOUR ASS.
i agree. UWSP is amazing, and 90fm brings so much more to it. Trivia alone makes it stand out, and everything else we do just sends it through the roof. 90fm deserves this more than anyone else.
Do you really think that's unique? Most stations have to deal with being underfunded, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if most of the stations in the Top 25 could use a little more money. And not all of us can rely on rich alumni to keep us going.

WASU plays the best new alternative rock that's out there. They have great ticket giveaways to awesome concerts and midnight premiere passes to new movies coming to the area. They also serve the purpose that a radio station should always fulfill…serving the people. They have news, sports, and information to inform the listening audience and keep them up to date on the latest happenings. They truly deserve an MTVu Woodie Award. I have been with 90fm for four years and it is absolutely amazing how much we do here. Every year we have Dylan Days, Jazzfest, Radiothon, Beatlesfest, and Trivia which is world's largest trivia contest. Plus 90fm does everything that a normal student radio station would do. This station is amazing and college would suck without having 90fm.

They broadcast a lot of the university sports, but also the high school sports in the area too. They keep the area updated on community events and has live programming from 6AM to Midnight daily.

Here is why 90.5 WASU is the best college radio station:
1) The perfect music for college!
2) Always giving away great stuff like movie tickets, concert tickets, and anything else us poor college kids want.
3) Hilarious commercials that are created by the students.
4) Great radio voices that are always on air. LIVE!
5) They do so much and their studio is like a closet. A new one is being built right now but they are the best station I have ever heard any they have done so much with little resources. That is passion!
6) The station manager is Jon Wood. Obviously WASU is destined to win the woody award!

Actually Zerbe, no. Most of our programming consists of Alternative/Independent music. But we also play jazz, blues, oldies, funk, reggae, metal, acoustic, electronica, and hip-hop. 90fm plays those weekends of Bob Dylan and the Bealtes because we spend a whole weekend appreciating legendary artists such as the Beatles and Bob Dylan, because a lot of artists' inspirations are Dylan and the Beatles. Plus both of them have enough music to play for 56 hours. So no, we're not a classic rock station. We're station that plays all songs besides the hits that you here on classic rock stations.

WGRE is a great radio station. DePauw University is a very small liberal arts university and to be included among these much larger schools speaks volumes to the quality of the music and content of WGRE. It plays a great combination of up-and-coming bands and classics. Many people on and off campus (around the world even thanks to listen live on wgre.org) listen. It is on 24 hours, manned completely by students. WGRE is just a great radio station.

WCRD at Ball State is completely student-run. It was started by David Letterman with that in mind, and has been student-run for 21 years. This past year, through the hard work and dedication of the students, WCRD was able to move into a state-of-the-art facility that rivals most commercial radio stations.
Most of the funding the station gets comes from the students themselves…meaning they go out and sell the station to the community…just like any commercial radio station would do. Not only was it fun to work there (I'm an alum), but it was a great learning experience for someone who wanted to work in radio as a profession.

WSUM has live DJ's scheduled 24/7! Free-form programming so any DJ can play any style of music they want as well as host a talk show of any topic and get great sports coverage!

It's true – KSCR volunteers crashed a student government meeting (the last one of the fiscal year, the one everyone expects to last no more than 20 minutes) and turned it into a 4-hour marathon debate. The amount of the funding that the student government council threatened to pull–the ONLY handout money of any kind that KSCR receives from USC–was less than $5000. The rest of the station's paltry budget is generated by the tireless efforts of its all-student staff, who have had to get creative and do things like sell PSA time and have 24-hour Ella Fitzgerald marathons to raise funds. It is likely that KSCR runs on fewer funds than several of what you would call "broke stations."

I have volunteered at KSCR. I have been a member of its staff. I can confidently attest that it is "broke." We'd sure like to have money coming out of our ass, but the university and the student government respectively feel that USC's all-classical station and annual "big-ticket" crowd-pleasing concerts (staged completely without KSCR input and sanction) from the likes of The Fray are more important financial priorities.
So, please, get your facts straight before you spew bile at your brother. We're trying as hard as we can, too!

90 FM not only has a place on my car radio, but also a significant place in our community. Personally, I am not a college student any longer and not even an alum of UW-SP, but nonetheless, 90 FM has a place in my life not only for running the world's largest trivia contest, but also for providing endless hours of meaningful music, especially with Beatlesfest and Dylan Days (all of which are 54 hour extravaganzas). The station is also known for reaching out to our diverse community through it's programming, including an hour each day broadcast in Hmong. 90 FM is worthy of your consideration.

Yeah, KSCR does all the same things you think are so unique about your station…and I think every other station here does, too! We have little resources, a crappy studio and getting a new one in the fall, we give away AMAZING tickets to the BEST shows in LA (pretty sure buttfuck Appalachia can't give away Sonic Youth, Black Lips, Fever Ray, Butthole Surfers etc etc etc tickets; maybe bluegrass central?)
Except our manager has the last name "Wolf," and I'm pretty sure a Wolf could fuck up a piece of Wood any day.

WCRD is the #1 college radio station on the planet! I and a few others were on mtvU when WCRD was featured during the Woodie Awards in 2005/'06. Plus, our station now has state of the art facilities & top students to keep it going strong. 21 years strong that is.

WCRD is an amazing station and one of my best career influences while at Ball State. I was the Promotions Director and was lucky enough to help with the format change. The station now plays even more student approved music along with BSU info and specialty shows. I had the pleasure of booking concerts with local bands and interviews with touring artists. Along with getting WCRD to receive tickets to give away to the hottest concerts in Indiana. I now work for Live Nation and can thank WCRD for giving me the music business knowledge & experience to get my dream job!

WCRD has the best live sports coverage. The announcers at the games are better than the old guy who's been doing it for over 50 years!
WCRD covers more than just football and basketball. WCRD's coverage of swimming and diving was amazing and the ONLY time I've heard that sport on the radio!

WGRE plays a great mix of mostly alternative music and some popular music, too. It has specialty shows, sports and news broadcasts, and no commercials!
Airtime is around the clock during the school year which is quite impressive for a school of only 2400 students.

We actually have the only All American Rejects/Taking Back Sunday/Anberlin show in North Carolina, and it's on our campus
we just had the Disco Biscuits play which is like electronic/jam, and pop punk stuff on Thursday, and some more jam after that

"BEST shows" is a matter of opinion, I wouldn't call those the best shows anywhere, and same for a hell of a lot others
of course, some would too, but again, it's all opinion
we give away tix to shows in Charlotte and Raleigh, both over two hours away

WASU is awesome for the following reasons:

WASU is awesome! I've never heard a station so dedicated to it's listeners!
We do live in a small town. Why is that held against us? We wouldn't give up these beautiful mountains for anything. There's great hiking trails and lakes not even 15 minutes from campus. The best ski resorts in North Carolina are just down the road! The town is a top tourist spot! We love our town!
We'd take this town over a rude, noisy city any day!

Just because you say that you know what you're talking does NOT mean you know what you are talking about. We do ticket giveaways on air, sure, and there are some amazing shows that our listeners get to attend for free. But, we also put on our own shows for the USC students and LA public for free — 100% on our own. Yeah, maybe things like that have nothing to do with your 'radio station,' but it's just one amazing aspect of KSCR… and we don't bring in All American Rejects… gross.

WIUX has made the comeback of all comebacks. It's entirely student run and they work with little money they have and STILL put on great shows and events. Culture Shock every year? One of the best music festivals of up-and-coming artists out there AND it's completely free! The staff is there all the time and they aren't paid to do it–everyone who volunteers at WIUX truly loves being there and wants to see the station win the Woodie it deserves!

Can't we keep this classy? Wishing you all the best but it really isn't helping NY's image. NY as a state is a very diverse and interesting area with it's own cultural. Boone does have hicks which every city I've been to from NYC to LA has.
Our cultural is rich too in history and character. As a station and 90.5 and ASU bring that in to our education and our news. It's a positive influence. So it's a friendly competition, we all deserve to be here and have earned the right to be called a top college station.

We do have diversity up here from local bands like Do it To Julia, Farewell, to bands like Bafoodus, The Wailers, Step-Shows, Comedians Owen Smith and BJ Novak from the Office. We brought Dave Matthews Band when they were just starting out, John Mayer, Guster, Black Eyed Peas and few years back.
We're not in a major market at all yet we are able to bring a lot of entertainment to campus with a show or more a week. ASU has an amazing music program and music industry. From what it sounds like, you all do to. It's really damn cool that you brought those bands to campus(big dodos fan).
But seriously don't write 90.5 WASU and Appalachian off on a positive comment on your station. Feel free to be promoting your station with your strengths but what's the point in insulting our hardworking campus in the process?

Are you so threatened by us that you need to inform strangers, who are probably going to just vote for their favorite station anyways, that we are in the mountains of north carolina and are still able to bring strong acts and put together a radio station that is being considered in the same league as your colleges?
I decided to listen to KSCR to see what type of station ya'll are and honestly I'm impressed. I'm proud that we are able to be competing on the same field as a much bigger school who also knows what it's doing on the air. It gives credit to us too as we are able to be on that scale in a much smaller area. It's exciting.
It has nothing to do with the fact we have, not less, but a smaller and different campus than many of the schools here. It has to do with the fact we all are supporting great stations on a national scale.
Voters shouldn't care about where we are but how we sound. I hope the same goes for your college too.

im not in college yet but i definitely appreciate a diverse radio station and i know that 90 FM works hard to be unique
the only thing better than college students fighting for a radio station is a random person fighting for that radio station
90FM has provided me with entertainment on many long car drives

zerbe, what you dont realize is that bob dylan and the beatles were progressive bands at their time and they did their own thing. they are the reason most of the bands you listen to are here today
reality check, what you dont realize is the greatness of a station that doesnt play EVERYTHING you love. it gives you an oppurtunity to take in different types of music and discover artists
also, being mean isnt nice so everyone needs to cheer up and stop insulting eachother

Since we're all old enough to have some sort of morals let keep this from becoming a comment war.
Props to every University who got on here. They all did for obvious reasons.
I'm Voting for WASU because not only do they do everything listed from above, BUT THEY ALSO.
1) Don't fall to mainstream music, they help get new bands out (and give tickets) that will one day be like butthole surfers, blink 182, ect. Which is just as good if not better then going to some huge concert with thousands of people.
2) They bring history of music to the table by playing oldies and other pop culture with their commercials.
3) Absolutely no sell out commercials, so hardly any at all.
4) They're the radio station for one of the most legitimate schools out there. In my opinion universities don't get much fairer then Appalachian.

You're all wrong. KUPS is the best. We should get an award just for making it this far. We're BY FAR the smallest campus in this contest, are completely student run and function out of the world s amallest booth with a pretty tiny budget. Despite this CMJ LOVES us (our Music Directors get awards from them and do panels at CMJ Festival) and have been ranked in the top 12 college stations by the Princeton review for the last 5 years.Yep, we're pretty much amazing.

WRGW is amazing, completely student-run and the only station to actually utilize it's city.

WGRE is an amazing station. They play great alternative music along with superior coverage of all DePauw sports and local community sports as well. A fully run student station 24 hours a day shows the dedication and talent these 200 some people bring to the station. They are highly involved in campus philanthropy's as well as community work. Great Dj's, music, sports, production and all around awesome station!!!!! VOTE WGRE!!!

Don't really understand the spirit of your comments… WVFS is the Voice of Florida State–located in Tallahassee, a community with three universities. Those who listen to V89 represent a diverse population of all ages and backgrounds. Our struggles reflect the strength of our station. The resulting self-sufficiency and fortitude of KSCR have made the station better in every department. while funding from our student government is difficult, we've opened other lines of revenue (PSAs, underwriting, sponsorships, alumni funds, etc.) that allow us to continue to provide the services that our community and student body love (great crisp programming, "awesome shows," etc.). We've become a formidable institution in that regard, but we're open to any and all students at USC. We're run by students, for students, and you won't get anything like that elsewhere.

If you're going to study radio, you go as close to market one as you can. Market one is NYC. Ithaca is up in the middle of no where and so are all these other schools. Have fun finding internships when A) you don't have the professional broadcast training Hofstra provides and B) you live/go to school in an area that really has nothing to offer in that field. UW-Stevens Point and UW-Madison is part of UW System, along with Oshkosh, Lacrosse, Eau Claire, Stout, River Falls, Whitewater, Superior, and Plateville. Madison might be academically better than Stevens Point, but that doesn't make it a third rate version. They are both good schools with good radio stations (but 90fm is better.)

WGRE is an amazing station. They play great alternative music along with superior coverage of all DePauw sports and local community sports as well. A fully run student station 24 hours a day shows the dedication and talent these 200 some people bring to the station. They are highly involved in campus philanthropy's as well as community work. Great Dj's, sportscasters, news reporters, etc. DJ's have unique shows from Breakfast with the Babes, Sibling Rivalry, Flashback Shows and weekly giveaways!! VOTE WGRE!!!!!

I've tried to respect all the stations in this competition, but I've come to realize that KSCR is simply cocky, self-assured, and generally obnoxious. You don't seem to realize that rather than being miles ahead of the rest, you're simply on par with everyone else in this competition, even the so-called "hicks." KCOU has been run for 45 years solely by student volunteers. The dedicated staff has managed to create comprehensive programming while fostering the creativity of the entire staff. KCOU is constantly playing new music that cannot be heard anywhere else.
Last year KCOU was almost shut down by student government, but with the help of Mizzou students and KCOU staff, KCOU triumphantly rose again, bigger and better than ever!

The Matt Holidaye Show on WCRD is amazing! He goes from 2 am to 6 am, Wed thru Friday and plays all kinds of great music, from rap and rock to pop and techno. And you can't forget about WCRD's amazing morning news show… the most news in the morning, starting at 7 am sharp, every weekday morning! And WCRD News at 5 pm every weekday!!

I volunteered as a dj when I was a student and I was amazed at the variety of music 90 FM had in its collection-local bands to classic alternative to jazz. What an awesome mix. I learned of so many bands that I never would have discovered or been able to listen to for that matter, on any other station.

Professional radio (you know, what we're preparing for) does not focus on breaking bands. That is what the record labels do. This is not a competition to see who plays the most obscure random indie crap out there. This is a competition to see what stations operate professionally while entertaining a niche audience. You know, what commercial stations do. Who cares where you are located? Radio stations exist everywhere (*gasp*), and believe it or not, even small towns have successful stations that don't play country, bluegrass, or whatever the hell else you all seem to assume that WASU plays. This isn't a competition to see who has the biggest dick, although that is exactly what you guys all seem to think it is.

Considering the Madison station started years after the Point station and the people who started the Madison station actually talked to WWSP 90FM students as part of the research process during the long run-up to getting their station running, I'd say that, at least in terms of radio, Stevens Point isn't third rate in comparison whatsoever

Breaking :undergound" artists break the undergound out from under them, then they go commercial – if it wasnt for college radio, you would have ColdPlay, Kanye, or Jack's Johnson (yes, all horribly poor examples of "music", but they wouldnt be on commercial radio if it weren't for the college push – we had ColdPlay for 18 months before Commercial EVER played them! Kanye VINYLS for 3 years before a hint – then again, he was way more brain back then). And anyone who thinks that a broadcast course offered at a college has ANYTHING AT ALL to do with having an On Air show, just has no clue; they are MUTUALLY exclusive and independent of one another.

What moron ever convinced you that a College Station is BROADcasting? On the Internet, there are a LOT more niche-types to bring the "numbers" up and make bean-counters happy. Wait a minute, College Radio doesn't SELL advertising (they can't or would lose their License), so they CAN'T be commercial. And what Sefl-agrandizing Commercial Station would even LET a Loacl College COMPETE with them? Not many, unless they are donors – and at that point there's no conflict. Except of some wired, twisted interest.

A college music station run by students should be PROTECTED (and in US law, they are, in fact protected as far as WHAT music and programming they play) against having to "work hard" to keep well funded. In Canada, University and College (and even Highschool) Radio Stations lose their license BECAUSE they play commercial music – it is against CA Broadcast Regs to do so.

I am 55 years old, a UI alum, and have KRUI on the presets on our home Bose stereo, in my pickup, and on my MP3 FM. KRUI is truly an asset of the University of Iowa.

WASU plays the best new alternative rock that's out there. They have great ticket giveaways to awesome concerts and midnight premiere passes to new movies coming to the area. They also serve the purpose that a radio station should always fulfill…serving the people. They have news, sports, and information to inform the listening audience and keep them up to date on the latest happenings. They truly deserve an MTVu Woodie Award.
