KUPS? More like A Cups. You guys are the itty bitty titty committee of radio stations. You wish you had watermelons like WCRD does. CR-Double D's biatch!!! Pugent Sound? Psh. Smells like George Washingtons' asshole out there. I know cuz I got stuck there once.

I once broke my leg in three different place, bone out and everything … on the way to the hospital the ambulance driver put on Coyote Radio (csusb) … lets just say something incredible happened, I told him to pull over and I walked home. Later that night I listened to the station again, I woke up with a new leg and 3 girls to the side of me, ever since that crazy day I tune in on a daily basis.

WPTS will be the surprise package here…. I am telling you man… awesome music on that channel…
Love the dudes in the morning – especially the Friday Morning Lights and then the bollywood guy who follows them… never heard such awesome music and DJing…
WPTS rocks…. Go Panthers….
one time I was having sex with this girl, an all jokes aside her dad walks in, 6'6, 300 pounds, all hard rock muscle … I was scared shitless, didn't know what to do, and he looks fu#*ing pissed and angry, like he is about to kill me. I quickly turn on the COYOTE radio station, he looked at me, sat down and told me to finish my business.
When I was young my mother tried to abort me, but through the womb I heard the musical rockitude of WPTS and I held on for hours till I tired the doctors out. I held on with the hope that every day I'd be able to soak in their musical ambrosia. I held on for WPTS.

KUPS BABY,
We rock it hard, G'd up from the feet up, thugged out since cub scouts, can't stop won't stop from inside the cuts of Wheelock. Missou can't touch us and the coyote logo is from 1973. If you want to pick between balls and pitt than either way your dick'll smell like san bernadino (italian for saint bernard…don't Italians like facists? not only do they have a lame ass saint but they hate freedom). Our rims is big, our paint is fresh, and yes the trunk is wide. ARTIFICIAL HIP ALL DAY. Best in the biz baby.
Which of the top 5 radio stations snagged interviews with Bill Rancic, Governor Howard Dean, Florence LaRue and Edward James Olmos? ONLY WCRD. YOUR COLLEGE RADIO ON DEMAND, baby!
Yeah I heard Indiana is really great place to live and doesn't suck balls. Everyone wants to go to Indiana because there is so much to do there like suck on balls at Ball State University. KUPS makes your "double D's" look like the shrively balls you suck on.
Congratulations to all of you! This is the Station Manager for WASU, and we wanted to thank everyone for a great competition. Best of luck to all of you, can't wait to see who wins!!!
howabout where david letterman went to college, and also the cheapest college with the best academics in the ENTIRE USA and oh, yeah, the first campus in the USA to have campus wide wi-fi. Get informed before you make a mockery of your existence.
man, KUPS is by far the underdog in this lineup. That they've made it this far is rad. I'm happy for everyone on this list, but whoever's throwing out big-shot names… you should piss off with the elitism.
Where the fuck is puget sound…I'm calling shenanigans on that shit, they dont deserve to be in the top 5….same for Coyote radio in san bernando, there's like 599 people at that fuckin school…of all these shit schools, I gotta root for Ball State, because they have a meaningful and strong communications program…
Comment by Pissed off — October 28, 2009 @ 1:19 pm
Ball State is ranked in the top 10 Broadcast Journalism school in the nation, and (depending on what poll is looked at) is anywhere from 1-8 in terms of job placement in the field. Recent additions (thanks to generous donations from David Letterman) place it among the most technologically advanced college radio stations in America, and the shows are unrivaled. Sorry we can't all be in the high profile location of Tacoma, Washington (in case you didn't notice, that was sarcasm.)
Actually Ball State is the #3 ranked school for telecommunications…oh that includes radio. And really…you never heard of Ball State. I've never even heard of University of Puget Sound. I'm not sitting here talking smack about it. Why? Because I need FACTS to do this. If you knew at least where Ball State is at…which is Muncie, Indiana, then you can talk
I would also like to add that I would rather be bragging about David Letterman than the most notable alumni of the University of Puget Sound, Ted Bundy. I'll take talk show host over serial killer any day.
WCRD's David Boulton is the best! His British accent makes me meltttt!!!!!! Ow-ow!!!

KEEP HATING ON KUPS WHILE WE KEEP PLAYING THAT DOPE UNDERGROUND HIP HOP! SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF THE HIP HOP PROGRAM, WE SHIT ON ALL THESE OTHER RADIO STATIONS. LET THE UNDERDOG/SMALL SCHOOL SHOW YOU WATUP, POWER IN QUALITY NOT NUMBERS. KUPS IS ALREADY RANKED TOP 10 RADIO STATIONS BY PRINCETON REVIEW, THIS IS JUST SEALING THE DEAL.
wcrd blows. you play nothing but shitty mainstream music. there's no difference between wcrd and a local pop station. you know kups keeps hitting you with super legit underground hip hop and quality alternative/electronic. and yeah tacoma may not be one of the stand-out cities on the west coast but we shit on muncie, indiana. the only cool thing ball state has ever produced is nate davis-and he's pretty much retarded-what does that say?
Really? The only cool thing Ball State has ever produced was Nate Davis? Have you ever heard of David Letterman? Just curious…because it's kind of a big name. He also started WCRD. Just throwing that out there…
I'm actually surprised at all this smack-talk coming from other stations. I refuse to do that since I've never listened to the other stations, just like I'm sure peope supporting their stations have never listened to WCRD. I'm a proud alum of WCRD and Ball State and truly believe they deserve this award. This station has come a very long way since I was there between the upgrade in facilities (which beats most commercial radio stations), imaging, news, sports, it's all top-notch. VOTE FOR WCRD!!!
If you're going to talk trash about a school, you might want to spell it right so you don't look completely uneducated. It's Puget Sound. No "n", okay Darkwing Duck? Good luck with college. From the looks of it, it's going to be a rough ride for you.
Wow, Ballsack State is in first. I guess i'm not all that surprised. Living in America's asshole out in Indiana sucks such a fat nutsack that everyone probably just sits and votes 4 ballsack all day. Plus, your Bros' wrists are so strong from jackin off each other and your DD man boobs that you can click really fast for hours without breakin a sweat. It also isn't surprising that ballstate has one of the best job placement rankings in anything… The intelligent quotient of people in people in Indiana and the whole of America's asshole is nothing more than depressing at best… Graduates don't have too much competition, especially in journalism when an illiterate migrant mexican that doesn't even speak english can do a better job than your average citizen.
But back to radio. Does ballstate make its playlists by copying them song for song from the local top 40 clear channel station. Come on, you can train chimpanzees to put together a better show than anything on WRCD!!! KUPS easily plays the best selection of music, especially underground music, of any radio station. KUPS has the best in underground alternative, electronic, hip hop, punk, deathmetal, grindcore and tons of other things you won't hear anywhere else!!! There is no comparison. KUPS FTW!!!!!!

For all those talking jack about WCRD, you need to realize that Ball State is easily one of the best five tcom schools in the nation. Many of the people who graduate here go on to work for TV shows, huge radio stations, movies, big news stations, etc. WCRD plays what the students want to hear, even if that is the "shitty" pop music you refer to. We also have a deal with Scion who provides for us a promo car, we have sales team members who go out to local businesses and sell them spots, then those spots are produced by members of the station. We also broadcast pretty much every sport, and most people tune into WCRD for those broadcasts over the other stations. WCRD is a well rounded station that is completely ran by students. We do everything ourselves with no faculty help. WE DESERVE THIS AWARD!
WCRD….You have Christian music on the weekends. Lame.
Comment by KUPS weekend — October 29, 2009 @ 1:43 am
By "underground", I assume you mean "not famous". And by "not famous", I assume you mean "poor quality".
WCRD plays what Ball State wants to hear. If they didn't, there's a good chance they wouldn't be among the elite college radio listed here.
When it comes to metal, Ball State fans want to hear the real stuff. From a guy that works with, interviews and networks with some of metal's most influential figures (aka Jake Lentz).
If you want WCRD to play your so-called "underground" metal stuff, please submit it to Jake. Fair warning, though – if it's not that good (my bet is heavy on that), he'll throw it where it belongs – the trash can.
To men, that's what college radio is all about. And it's part of the reason why Cardinal Radio Dave is THE best college radio station out there.
Oh snap! Nate Davis reference! You got us! Never mind Papa John's Pizza or David Letterman (as Alex pointed out), let's focus on the best player in their football team's history!
"Tacoma may not be one of the stand-out cities on the west coast" just might be the understatement of the decade. Just saying.
As for "****ty mainstream music", maybe it's a hunch, but I think it's mainstream because people want to listen to it. If you looked, you could find that WCRD has a lot of variety for all listeners.
College radio isn't just for the music nerds. It's for everyone. Which is why WCRD is the bomb-diggity.
I came back from the dead as well to tell people to vote for KUPS. I used to listen to Loud Rock while I killed people and had sex with their decapitated decomposing bodies. So just listen to me, listen to KUPS, vote for KUPS, and maybe I won't rape and kill you.
This is coming from bum F U C K nowhere in Indiana….. HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Indiana doesn't even count as a legitimate state!!!!! If it got nuked, or invaded by canada or space aliens or just sank off the face of the earth no one would give a shit. It wouldn't even make the news. No one would even notice for years until the national average for IQ mysteriously jumped 10-15 points. Then people would realize its because no one in indana could be polled to bring it way the FUCK down!!!
Comment by ballSACKstate — October 29, 2009 @ 4:18 am
By underground I think he meant bands with talent that don't give a shit about making money but just play for the fans!!!! Bands Like Cattle Decap, Sleep Terror, Cephalotripsy, Cephalic Carnage, Flesh God Apocalypse and Disavowed to name a few.
Why would I listen to your shitty jake show and his crappy cliche bullshit? ANything remotely mainstream is just a ripoff of what underground death and blackmetal bands were doing five years ago!! If you were in the scene u'd know.
Tnakfully I can listen to the Aural Assault WED. at 10pm pacific time. The DJ is fuckin awesome. He's played with bands like cattle Decap, Daath and goatwhore. Hey, stop hating on KUPS. We've heard every UPS, USPS, What Can Brown Do For You joke in the book. It's not that original.
As for our logo, we're currently in the middle of a redesign process. Everything at our station (literally everything) is done by students so we threw together a temp. Sorry if you don't like it, this isn't a graphic design contest. We ALSO go into the community and sell underwriting to local businesses and then produce the spots for them, but we DON'T have a Scion sponsored car to do it in and pay for a lot of stuff (like gas money) out of pocket. KUPS is the product of hard volunteer work and love. You have to respect that.
So really, stop picking on the little guy. We're a solid station and we're so honored to be in the top 5 with 4 other big stations. We've always held our own and despite being small get GREAT ratings (See Princeton Review), have a fantasticly loyal local following and promoters love us (Our Alternative Music Director paneled at CMJ this year!!!).
So put up or shut up, let the votes decide.

Why are we apologizing for our logo? I actually rather like it, even if it is only temporary. Simple and classy. Sorry WCRD, not all of us are creative enough to put red-orange letters stylized to look like graffiti at a slightly cockeyed angle. Don't worry though, we'll get there someday.

And you spelled it wrong btw… I think school spirit is awesome. But dang! Don't be discriminating against other schools with false info… I think they are all good schools… including Ball State. You're just having trouble with finding reasons as to why your school is so ******* better than the rest.
What does it matter that Ballsack state has a "strong communications program"? Good thing the woodie is FOR best communications program. You're just butt hurt that your school is gonna lose to KUPS.

You may be Goliath, but we are David… And David wins. So yes, we do deserve to win because we don't need to go to a large school in order to find people good enough to run an amazing radio station… we found talent in a much smaller population which says a whole lot about the quality of all of our students!

Ted Bundy went to UPS for a year before transferring to UW. I think Adam West is a far cooler alum than Ted Bundy.
I also think its cool that UPS is the only private, liberal arts college with their radio station represented in this competition.
Just listened to WCRD and heard the some of the worst music ever. Pitbull, Seminsonic and the Tom Petty…play some more random s*** and call yourself a legit station. The stream had a ton of static too. You shouldn't even be in the running for this award if you just play Top 40 sh**. I can tune into any number of commercial stations and hear that f-ing noise.

Static on the stream? You sure it wasn't your jank computer?
You think yours is the ONLY student-run radio station? We sell underwriting spots to businesses in our community, too. And the Scion wasn't handed to us–our sales team worked their butts off to arrange a trade with the dealership. That's what HARD WORK is all about.
Don't complain about the size of your station. You get what you put into it. Work a little harder… improve your broadcasting radius by upgrading the antenna, hire a street team to promote… increase your station's online presence… it's not impossible. But it's these little things that turn a tiny station into one with a real presence. That's exactly what we've done at WCRD over the last couple of years, and it's only getting better!
Comment by Nick Takis — October 30, 2009 @ 9:36 pm
Sorry, it was probably just the awful music you were playing……or it was actually your stream because every other stations stream sounded crystal clear.
I believe Darkwing Duck might have been trying to make fun of Puget Sound by replacing the word Puget with "pungent", which is having a strong smell (usually negative). Although, judging by the rest of his comment, that might be pushing it a little bit as that type of wit does not match up with his crude comments.
For me, I'll support KUPS any day. The station has consistently good DJs and broadcasts not only to the University, but to the surrounding neighborhoods of Tacoma as well. Keep on rocking, KUPS!
KUPS is changing their logo? Aww, I think it is great how it is. It doesn't need to be showy like the other stations. I have no doubt that the new logo will be just as good though, if not better.

Wait Nick, didn't David Letterman give you a ton of money to start your station in 1988? Our mix board is older than your station! We know you're student run, but we don't have a journalism program, we don't have famous sponsors and we started out as a Carrier Current Station in 1968 (the signal was only available on campus buildings, you had to plug a reciever into the wall).
So don't talk down to us about becoming a "real presence". We were a major presence long before you existed. Our school doesn't have the funds to "upgrade our antenna" which wouldn't do shit because we're broadcasting at our full range. I'm sorry you live in flat podunk Muncie where you don't have a MAJOR CITY that gave birth to alternative music to compete with for airspace.
And none of our DJs or street team are "hired". We have 1 full time employee. Don't think for a second that we don't work hard and you better believe we LOVE EVERY DAMNED SECOND OF IT.
WE WEREN'T COMPLAINING, WE WERE BRAGGING.
So pay a little more attention:

I'm glad that skanky excuse for a night show host keeps feeding you money or you'd all have to go work the corn fields.
A god damn guarantee that more people have heard of TACOMA than MUNCIE.

WCRD started the hate by calling us the "itty bitty titty committee" of radio. Your fans seem just as venomous.
WCRD all the way! Let's hear it for the PARTY PATROL! They're always out at Ball State sporting events, playing music and giving away T-shirts and prizes! I love em!
Comment by twitterfreak — October 31, 2009 @ 7:24 am
WCRD may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's what Ball State students want to hear. After all, it IS our slogan: College Radio ON DEMAND. We're the most accessible radio station there is: three phone lines, AIM, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, email. Not to mention the hardest working staff on campus.
Comment by Nick Takis — October 31, 2009 @ 7:26 am
Forgot to mention… try finding another radio station in Muncie that plays rap, hip-hop and R&B? Give up? There isn't one! … What about a Muncie station that plays a greater variety of music overall? You guessed it… there isn't one! WCRD = the best.
Comment by Nick Takis — October 31, 2009 @ 7:30 am
WCRD's web presence is SUPERIOR to the others'. It's that simple. 'CRD is the only station that has decent web advertising, as well as on-air spots that generate revenue. And does anyone else have a live webcam in their studio?
Comment by WCRD Multimedia — October 31, 2009 @ 7:36 am
It's not from the sixties at all, we just made it a little while ago. It doesn't even look like it was made in the sixties. That's just a terrible insult.
Why would your station be on Demand if there's no demand for it? BOOYAKASHA
You obviously haven't heard Girl Talk, Sundays from 10 pm until midnight… only on WCRD.

It could have been one of our local artists' songs. Some of their tracks aren't of amazing audio quality, but it's better than not airing their music at all.

I'm not very fond of Christian music, either. We're in the process of changing our weekend rotation. It'll feature less Christian music and a new block of jazz.

Actually, San Bernardino is the largest county in the US. San Bernardino (the city) is about an hour [and a half] long drive away from the beach and LA. Great location. 8) and we happen to have a lot of mountains out here with coyotes… hence our mascot and radio name: Coyote Radio.
I don't care how large or small your school is. What is your rotation like? Does it target a niche audience, or are you aiming for a broader range of people? What kind of learning experience do you provide for your student managers and DJs? Is your station a viable alternative to the commercial stations in your town? How much real-world experience are you gaining from all the time you put into it? You have to do what you can with what you have. If Ball State had 2,000 students instead of 20,000, WCRD would STILL be the great immersive opportunity for its students and a worthwhile source of entertainment for Muncie and Delaware County.
Comment by Nick Takis — October 31, 2009 @ 8:19 am
@golden: You think WCRD only plays pop music? You've got to be joking. The largest radio station in Muncie plays nothing BUT pop music. When listeners want variety, they turn to WCRD. We play everything… rock, classic rock, oldies, rap, hip-hop, country, alternative, techno, dance, jazz, metal, hard rock, CMJ… and yes, a little bit of pop.
Comment by Nick Takis — October 31, 2009 @ 8:25 am
WCRD is simply the best, no ifs, ands, or buts. They have an amazing management staff who is always helpful and always willing to help out their DJs, sales people, production crew, and news team. The music that they play is awesome! It's a wide variety of everything so it appeals to everyone. They don't play music to suit one person at Ball State and surrounding areas, they play music to suit everyone at Ball State and surrounding areas. It's also the best equipment around.
So, don't hate.
wcr-deezy! i'm listening to their football coverage right now. it's so much better than the "professionals" that are three times our age. it's the only station i listen to… esp for ball state sports.

WCRD is great. Diverse sound and everyone there is great. Got nothing left but it ain't bringin' me down
I'm just gonna follow The Sound
And The Sound is pleasing
When it sounds like it is breathing
There's no one around
To hear the notes falling down
Nobody seems to care
The feeling isn't there
Like it was all a bad dream
Now we're looking everywhere
You keep searching
You keep on searching
Got nothing left but it ain't bringin' me down
I'm just gonna follow The Sound
That ringing in my ears
Oh whats that sound
It's the cold death knell
Of the big ships bell
See the strings unwound
See them lying on the ground
Can't pick up your guitar
Cause you've forgotten The Sound
We'll keep searching
Keep on searching
Got nothing left but it ain't bringin' me down
I'm just gonna follow The Sound
yeah but all the good, big stations are here in california!! and they model themselves after coyote radio! step your game up and just vote for coyote radio!!
WCRD is not environmentally aware driving cars around and stupid things like that. Stop driving your car around and start making your whack station better. You should listen to KUPS you might learn something.
I believe Christian music can sometimes be good. And perhaps that's what the listeners want to hear on a Sunday! So WCRD allows listeners to get what they want. hmmmm….have you guys ever done that. Try something BOLD for once! Be different!
WTF Kups? You'll definitely need cups to protect yourself in a battle with the best radio station ever, WCRD! You do low blows to other radios, so be prepared to receive some back from others!
Comment by Always Right — November 2, 2009 @ 10:57 pm
Top Ten Reason why WCRD should win….
1. Play what listeners want and demand….College Radio on Demand
2. Variety, variety, variety…not afraid to try something new like Christian music
3. The sports coverage kills…no pun attended!
4. News team is freakin' amazing…Who else can give you a bird's eye view of the world?
5. Sales and promotion team got a Scion!.. A what? A Scion! Yea that's right!
6. The website looks great. Go ahead look, you know you wanna…wcrd.net
7. All disk jockeys have rockin' shows…trained by the best!
8. sponsors numerous events and fundraisers…who else supports breast cancer awareness month?
9. Founded by David Letterman…station located in Letterman building
10. Has the state of the art equipment…while the rest of you are using ancient equipment!

Really Coyote Radio has the best music. After listening to these top five, I don't think KCOU deserves to be up here. KUPS is pretty good. I think they are the only real competition for Coyote Radio. But in the end, the Yote's take the cake.
Wow, that's really classy of you. Thanks for those words of wisdom.
Comment by Nick Takis — November 3, 2009 @ 10:11 pm
If you knew anything about radio, you would know that any station with an up to date antenna, and sound system (which I assume all five of these stations have or they wouldn't be here), doesn't allow for static unless you are out of the listening area, and fixes your levels if they go too high to where they don't sound muffled.
Comment by Radio Teacher — November 3, 2009 @ 10:29 pm
Lets just be serious for a second….nobody competes with the KUPS….with some of the best radio hosts around KUPS is simply an experience of a lifetime
kups plays for a student body of 2,500 ball state for 18,000+….we clearly have impressed a lot of people to get here while ball state just wins by numbers

You are a moron. Maybe the reason the school you looked up on google had 599 students is because your too big of a retard to spell the name right. Its San BernaRDINO. Good effort, but your off by umm about 17,000 students give or take. So next time you decide to talk shit try knowing what your talking about.
WHY CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?
i'm rooting for kups but that doesn't mean that i think that there should be any animosity in this competition. congrats to all five stations for getting this far. just to let you know, other four stations, not everyone at puget sound is an ass hole. there are lots of nice people and one kick ass radio station.

Dude we're(KUPS) broke beyond belief and we even have three phone lines, AIM twitter, Facebook, MySpace and email. I'm on staff on Sunday I spent 12 hours straight in the station. I get there every at 7 and go to my classes in between eat at the station and go home around 11 every weekday. We work our asses off so don't even start.
I'm so god damn sleep deprived I even forgot how to write. So go enjoy your big bully budget and all your fancy ass equipment and be whatever you want to be. We've got heart and taste, what do you have to offer other than big words, money, and awards from obscure organizations.
Amen to that! I too am on core staff and slept on the janky couch we've had since god-only-knows after staying up 'til 3am organizing voting drives. If we're not dedicated then there is no such thing.
I've been doing this for three years and every semester I'm inspired by our little station. We're may not be anything flashy but holy hell are we committed to bringing the best music to our town and giving back to our tiny community.
But don't feel bad about bashing the little guy, we take it as a compliment to see such a big equipped station feel threatened by our tenacity. We're definitely doing something right. ;)
Comment by HARD CORE STAFF — November 4, 2009 @ 9:18 am
WPTS Pittsburgh is clearly the best station in the list. They have the best sports town in the country and they have the best, most eclectic taste in music. Plus they are fun to listen too and they play METAL.
The BEST college radio station shouldn't be illegally playing COPY-WRITTEN music under their spots. It's not anyone being "big." It's just something that should not be happening for the sake of the music owners. Hopefully mtvU recognizes this.

I can't believe how mean some of these comments are. I might support one radio station more than the others but I think it's awesome that these are the top 5 in the country! When I looked and saw who we were against, I thought it was awesome and such a wide variety! That is a big deal and instead of being rude about it and trying to put others down, just focus on getting a vote for your station. We all have our faults, it's college radio and a lot of us put hard work into it, hence why we are among the top 5. You all deserve a round of applause but need to work on the respect part. It just looks really unprofessional and mean. I am sorry some of you feel the way you do. I thought radio was supposed to be fun and it's one of the best things I enjoy on my Fridays but now you guys have kind of taken the fun out of it.

I'd say that they are both pretty good radio stations, but KUPS deserves some recognition for competing against schools ten times its size. All of the radio stations are obviously great, since they made it to the top 5. It's pretty cool that KUPS has a children's stories show.
I want to point out that since the standings are created by vote, it is apparent that Puget Sound students love their station ten times more than Ball State students. If every student at Ball voted once, each student at Puget Sound would have to vote ten times to keep up. And they have.
Comment by MattHollidayeFan — November 5, 2009 @ 1:30 am
Come back when you learn to write.
"mascot 'doesn't' cut wood",
"students 'than' your university 'does'",
"your station 'is' sounding"
Also, the comment box is here so people can leave messages. The people who keep posting here, the people who your are telling to shut up, are only posting because they are supportive of KUPS and want to see it do well.
All in all, even for the schools that don't win, this contest is a great way to encourage people to listen to independent radio and raise awareness of great college radio stations. Not to mention it probably encourages these stations to up their game and improve their broadcasting as well.
Comment by BungalowBill — November 5, 2009 @ 2:15 am
Red Herring: also called a "fallacy of relevance." This occurs when the speaker is trying to distract the audience by arguing some new topic, or just generally going off topic with an argument.
Comment by BungalowBill — November 5, 2009 @ 2:20 am
Everyone on here needs to chill. Can we not acknowledge that each and every one of our schools has an amazing radio station, and that each has its own strengths. None of us made it into the top 5 without being great. Why not share in each others success and the fact that each of these radio stations is great not because they are striving for some award but because they know and have a passion for entertaining their audience. Stop putting each other down, and instead compliment each other on the good attributes of each and share your ideas with each other about what works for your station and what doesn't; but don't forget that because of different audiences, what works for one station may not work for another…allow this to be educational, and not degrading.
Share your stories about how your radio station has made it to where they are. Tell us how your radio station has affected your life, whether you work there or just simply listen to the shows. But don't use these stories to put other stations down; more than anything, this only makes you and your station look worse.
Comment by Friend from UPS — November 5, 2009 @ 4:18 am
No matter who the winner may be, the prize is only worth something if the respect of your peers is also gained–otherwise it is weightless and only remembered by a few. As the top five radio stations, we are each others peers, and how are we to respect each other if we cannot treat each other at least in a civil manner, if not in a manner of true comradership.
As a UPS student I sincerely hope that my peers will discontinue the bad mouthing and set a good example. Being number two does not give us the right to trash talk the number one… Just as being number one does not give the right to trash talk the number two.

Hey Ball State, where are you guys on the Princeton Review's top 20 college radio stations list again?
kups should be disqualified from this contest for breaking copyright law. don't you know you can't use copyrighted music in spots? i don't think spoon would appreciate it. you're no underdog. you're just cheaters.
Come on, this award has nothing to do with the schools/places people come from. It's really just about showing appreciation to the stations we love to listen to, and this whole war of words is honestly just a sign that you feel intimidated.
WCRD is the home of some of the greatest shows on the air! Not to mention WCRD plays a great variety of songs. ON DEMAND is what we're all about. WCRD is #1!
amen??? ……hope coyote radio wins to shut all these stupid immature peps. Respect to those who are not taking this competition over the head & just hoping for the best to win…
Are you all really college students? I don't go to ANY of these schools, and to be quite honest I'm glad I don't. I wouldn't want to go somewhere where people act like they are still in high school or middle school.
Comment by UPS Weekend Mistress — November 6, 2009 @ 2:30 am
Incorrect, we play all sorts of music on the weekend from world, to folk, and jazz to classical. We even have children's music. KUPS plays music from pretty much every genre. You could say we are like a rainbow of beautiful people playing beautiful music. Don't be jealous.
Comment by Nick Takis — November 6, 2009 @ 3:47 am
Weekend shows have the freedom to play what they want to and what they think their audiences want to listen to. Most Dj's have one or two hour slots, and some DJs like to play stuff like children's music. My friends who have weekend shows enjoy playing music like oldies, or blues that hardly ever get played in mainstream media. But the point is that KUPS has diversity.
Comment by YOYOYOKUPS — November 6, 2009 @ 3:48 am

@ MAPESKIIS Just check Wikipedia.
There are many famous Ball State alums beside Letterman, although probably none more famous: Jim Davis (creator of Garfield), Doug Jones (actor), Joyce DeWitt (actress), John Schnatter (Founder and Chairman of Papa John's Pizza), Angelin Chang (Grammy-award winning classical pianist), Scott Halberstadt (actor), Jeffrey D. Feltman (U.S. ambassador to Lebanon), Angela Ahrendts (CEO of Burberry), Kent C. Nelson (Retired President and CEO, United Parcel Service).
Think Letterman is "all we have going on?"

WCRD Radio has done some amazing things in the past three years. I was lucky enough to be apart of this great organization during this exciting time. From moving from a hole in the wall to brand new state-of -the-art facility, to winning numerous awards in sports broadcasting, Advertising, Spot production, and news feature stories.
WCRD is a student ran station from the personality to its general manager. The people of WCRD are dedicated, and persistent! I remember the station had been talking about getting a vehicle to put their call letters and logo on for quite sometime. Through their persistence and hard work, they now can say they have a vehicle with their name and logo on it to use while doing remotes, and other promotional events.
The sports department has one numerous awards for their superb talent of calling Ball State sporting events!
The news department has come a very long way in the past as well. They went from doing a one hour news broadcast a day, to adding mid-day news briefs, and a morning news broadcast.
I may be a little biased as I worked for WCRD for 3 years as a News Director; however, I feel like through the training of the faculty/staff in the Telecommunications Department at Ball State University, the staff that run and operate the station has some of the best training around!

i agree with u alex….i kno WCRD is the BEST COLLEGE RADIO ON DEMAND!!!!!

Thinking people everywhere listen to KUPS, The Sound. Why? Because KUPS questions everything, except your intelligence.
Comment by The Thinker — November 8, 2009 @ 8:26 pm
I'm glad to see this comment because I was shocked at how horrible the people from KUPS have been. Obviously they weren't taught any manners or anything about sportsmanship. I agree the votes should go to WCRD!! They rock and have an awesome news department.
Spencer, your math looks a bit flawed. And as the other poster pointed out, I think you're drastically underestimating Ball State's students (especially the management team– they break their backs sleeping on the floors of their offices to keep this place running smoothly. Nobody works harder).
Comment by Nick Takis — November 9, 2009 @ 7:31 am
It's good to have you on board the WCRD team, Jesus!
Comment by Nick Takis — November 9, 2009 @ 7:34 am
WCRD: We're Classy Radio on Demand.
Comment by Nick Takis — November 9, 2009 @ 7:35 am
I have to agree with Alex and mamasars on this one. The comments coming from KUPS are absolutely despicable. You KUPS'ers should be ashamed of yourselves for posting such garbage. If your input on this comment board is at all representative of your station or volunteers, a victory for WCRD should be pretty damn easy.
Comment by Nick Takis — November 9, 2009 @ 7:40 am
I once needed a kidney transplant, and the entire staff of WCRD offered me a kidney. Now I have so many kidneys I don't know what to do! Thanks for the generosity WCRD!

Carol never wore her safety goggles… now she's forced to listen to KUPS because she can't see how to change the station. Everyone knows KUPS sucks.
Comment by jesusmonster — November 9, 2009 @ 8:07 am

Comment by detectivebrown — November 9, 2009 @ 8:07 am
I absolutely agree with you, Kofi. WCRD deserves recognition at the presidential level. I am inviting their managers to the East Room at The White House for a luncheon (and my favorite dish– fondue!). It's more of a pleasure for me, though. It's amazing to be in the presence of their amazing management staff.
Comment by Pres. Barack Obama — November 9, 2009 @ 8:23 am
I heard KUPS on a tour of Puget Sound University when I was a senior in high school. My parents said if I was going to go to a school with such a stupid radio station then they weren't putting me out of their will.
Comment by KUPSAKAFUCKTARDS — November 9, 2009 @ 8:25 am
Hillary said if I was going to have another affair it better be with a manager from WCRD. I'm on my way cardinals!!

@harrison: princeton disqualified us for being too hot. we were ruled a fire hazard by the fire marshal.
Comment by ummmm yeah — November 9, 2009 @ 8:41 am
Please don't attribute these comments to our staff. And don't slander our President. I'm sure all the volunteers at the other stations are just as embarrassed about the lewd comments left by some of their affiliates as we are. We have wished you all well and I will be so glad to see this board shut down. I'm tired of all of it and I'm upset by your attempt to guilt trip us for something outside of our control.
Please be understanding. We're the underdogs and our fans are stoked. Most of what has been said is unfounded garbage and all I can suggest is that you shake it off because you know as well as I do that it doesn't matter at all. I personally apologize for it but it's free speech. All that matters is that you love your station, and I can tell that you all do.
Now everyone shut the fuck up and click and we'll see what happens on the 18th.
Comment by KUPS Core Staff — November 9, 2009 @ 8:44 am
Can you point me to the FCC statute that you're referring to because I'm pretty sure there's nothing illegal about it.

I've heard all this talk about Ball State and David Letterman. Well, Puget Sound has some great alumni of their own. Let's see David Letterman beat Jori Chisholm in Bagpiping, or maybe he'd rather try and out-cook Jeff Smith, perhaps a day on the slopes with Gretchen Fraser?

Comment by No really. — November 9, 2009 @ 11:11 pm
coyote radio — you guys sound pretty amazing. if i didn't love my station so much, i'd vote for you just because you know how to keep it clean.
wcrd — you guys are seriously a bunch of shit-stirrers. ten times as many students at your school as ours, but not half the class. almost every comment i've read from somebody at your station has made me think less of your station and become prouder of ours. this is not a dick-measuring contest. maybe if you had the same passion for your radio as you did for your ego then you'd get a little respect from someone outside of muncie, bumfuck nowhere.
kups — we rock! even if we lose, we won because we got this far. i commend every single one of you who has probably gotten carpal tunnel for voting as much as you have been to keep up. i love our school and i love our tiny little radio. every one of you involved with kups, in any way, shape or form is amazing and the reason that we have gotten as far as we have! and we didn't need david letterman to get us here! (because really, who gives a shit about david letterman).

Comment by A-Bomb — October 28, 2009 @ 4:41 pm

wcrd blows. you play nothing but shitty mainstream music. there's no difference between wcrd and a local pop station. you know kups keeps hitting you with super legit underground hip hop and quality alternative/electronic. and yeah tacoma may not be one of the stand-out cities on the west coast but we shit on muncie, indiana. the only cool thing ball state has ever produced is nate davis-and he's pretty much retarded-what does that say?
Comment by golden — October 28, 2009 @ 8:46 pm

I'm actually surprised at all this smack-talk coming from other stations. I refuse to do that since I've never listened to the other stations, just like I'm sure peope supporting their stations have never listened to WCRD. I'm a proud alum of WCRD and Ball State and truly believe they deserve this award. This station has come a very long way since I was there between the upgrade in facilities (which beats most commercial radio stations), imaging, news, sports, it's all top-notch. VOTE FOR WCRD!!!
Comment by Alex — October 28, 2009 @ 9:07 pm

Comment by @ZachZipLock — October 29, 2009 @ 1:39 am
Comment by brootal — October 29, 2009 @ 1:45 am
Does KUPS make it's playlists by copying them song for song from some scene kid's iPod?
Comment by brootal — October 29, 2009 @ 1:47 am

Comment by KUPS LUVER — October 30, 2009 @ 12:03 am
It's a temp design. What's so great about your logos?
Comment by Excuse me? — October 30, 2009 @ 12:36 am

Ok People. You keep saying that KUPS doesn't deserve to win because the University of Puget Sound is a small school… but in my opinion, the fact that we are such a small school and have been able to make such an amazing showing against schools 10 times our size is pretty darn amazing. You may be Goliath, but we are David… And David wins. So yes, we do deserve to win because we don't need to go to a large school in order to find people good enough to run an amazing radio station… we found talent in a much smaller population which says a whole lot about the quality of all of our students!

Some also say that babies exposed to KUPS while not only become incredible musicians, but they will also exceed in every aspect of life, particularly the arts. FInally, UPS routinely sends among the highest percentage of grads to the Peace Corps out of all schools in the country. Many attribute students' philanthropic work to their fabulous radio station.

KUPS is the best college radio station I have ever heard. The DJs are consistently good, there is a wide variety of shows, and even though it is student run, one of my professors has his own show! Vote for KUPS all day every day!

*You've got no fear of the underdog, that's why you will not survive*

Lean how to use proper grammar before you try to talk about a college. And go back to elementary school to learn geography so that you can learn where Indiana is located.
Comment by Zack Schooler — October 31, 2009 @ 3:57 am
DEPENDING ON THE POLL?!? WTF? KUPS doesn't even have a journalism program and we get more love from our community (as reflected by the Princeton Review) and have had more CMJ recognitions for amazing staff than all the other stations. I'm glad that skanky excuse for a night show host keeps feeding you money or you'd all have to go work the corn fields.
A god damn guarantee that more people have heard of TACOMA than MUNCIE.

BOOYAKASHA

Actually, San Bernardino is the largest county in the US. San Bernardino (the city) is about an hour [and a half] long drive away from the beach and LA. Great location. 8) and we happen to have a lot of mountains out here with coyotes… hence our mascot and radio name: Coyote Radio.
Comment by Alisha — October 31, 2009 @ 8:17 am

Got nothing left but it ain't bringin' me down
I'm just gonna follow The Sound
And The Sound is pleasing
When it sounds like it is breathing
There's no one around
To hear the notes falling down
Nobody seems to care
The feeling isn't there
Like it was all a bad dream
Now we're looking everywhere
You keep searching
You keep on searching
Got nothing left but it ain't bringin' me down
I'm just gonna follow The Sound
That ringing in my ears
Oh whats that sound
It's the cold death knell
Of the big ships bell
See the strings unwound
See them lying on the ground
Can't pick up your guitar
Cause you've forgotten The Sound
We'll keep searching
Keep on searching
Got nothing left but it ain't bringin' me down
I'm just gonna follow The Sound
ONWARD HO KUPS

3. The sports coverage kills…no pun attended!
4. News team is freakin' amazing…Who else can give you a bird's eye view of the world?
5. Sales and promotion team got a Scion!.. A what? A Scion! Yea that's right!
6. The website looks great. Go ahead look, you know you wanna…wcrd.net

If you knew anything about radio, you would know that any station with an up to date antenna, and sound system (which I assume all five of these stations have or they wouldn't be here), doesn't allow for static unless you are out of the listening area, and fixes your levels if they go too high to where they don't sound muffled.

We're definitely doing something right. ;)

I smell a little jealously going on here….

Don't take my word for it either, go ahead have a listen. I'd be surprised if you don't find that KUPS is the epitome of what college radio should sound like.

@ MAPESKIIS Just check Wikipedia.
There are many famous Ball State alums beside Letterman, although probably none more famous: Jim Davis (creator of Garfield), Doug Jones (actor), Joyce DeWitt (actress), John Schnatter (Founder and Chairman of Papa John's Pizza), Angelin Chang (Grammy-award winning classical pianist), Scott Halberstadt (actor), Jeffrey D. Feltman (U.S. ambassador to Lebanon), Angela Ahrendts (CEO of Burberry), Kent C. Nelson (Retired President and CEO, United Parcel Service).
Think Letterman is "all we have going on?"
Comment by Nick Takis — November 6, 2009 @ 3:55 am
Really? Ballsack state? Are you 12? Oh god this comment is embarrassing…I seriously hope this person was drunk when they posted this, for their own sake. I agree. While there has been some trash talk by some 'CRD folk (which I don't condone), there has been MUCH more from the other stations, which to me shows they are trying anything to get votes for their station.

We're educational stations. We can't play copywritten music in our underwriting spots or station promos. Duh!

Again, where are you getting this from? I'm not being snarky. I am apparently not informed.

coyote radio — you guys sound pretty amazing. if i didn't love my station so much, i'd vote for you just because you know how to keep it clean.
wcrd — you guys are seriously a bunch of shit-stirrers. ten times as many students at your school as ours, but not half the class. almost every comment i've read from somebody at your station has made me think less of your station and become prouder of ours. this is not a dick-measuring contest. maybe if you had the same passion for your radio as you did for your ego then you'd get a little respect from someone outside of muncie, bumfuck nowhere.
kups — we rock! even if we lose, we won because we got this far. i commend every single one of you who has probably gotten carpal tunnel for voting as much as you have been to keep up. i love our school and i love our tiny little radio. every one of you involved with kups, in any way, shape or form is amazing and the reason that we have gotten as far as we have! and we didn't need david letterman to get us here! (because really, who gives a shit about david letterman).
